New Bedford Whaling Museum

It gets a 5/5 from me that’s for sure. There was so much to see and do. And yes, I did see the famed merch, but did not get a shirt or mug only because I have a billion black tees already and I am inundated with mugs. But, it was very lovely.

The whale bones were still releasing its oils. That was what I wanted to see the most and I was mesmerized. I was hoping for some weird smells, but there were none.

The Lagoda of New Bedford is a replica whaling boat that you can actually hop on and explore. Hard hats are offered because you can potentially knock yourself out with how low everything is.

There were a bunch of stuffed animals and some were showcased at the World’s Fair. So, they’re pretty old.

And as I happened upon an exhibit of mixed media art that had me mesmerized, I actually met the artist Susan Heideman. She was so lovely and kind – answering my questions about how she came to incorporate threading into her paintings on paper. It was inspiring – she is inpiring!

Some other art that I enjoyed:

“Along the Marsh” oil on canvas by Nancy Dyer Mitton
“Portrait of Mercy Pease Taber Alden” oil on canvas attributed to Hin Qua
“If It Feels Good, Do It” found plastic mosaic on panel by Duke Riley. He creates vividly colorful compositions from plastic trash collected on East coast beaches.
“Portrait of Antonio L. Lopes” oil on canvas by Deborah B. Macy. Antonio L. Lopes was the last man to have sailed onboard a New Bedford whaler.

This is definitely one of my favorite museum experiences.
