On my first day of vacation, I took the kiddo and my mom to go check out 100+ elephant sculptures hand-carved by indigenous artisans from India using an invasive weed called katana camera that has overtaken Indian forests and displaced local wildlife.
We started on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall off of Dartmouth Street and were awestruck by the number and sizes of the pieces. There are signs warning against getting on the sculptures but being able to touch them really highlighted the skill of the folks who made them — how does this weed that has the feeling and texture of wood bend like that?
Each statue is modeled after a real, living elephant in India. And among all these elephants is a lone, red one.
My mom and the kiddo thoroughly enjoyed this.
The traveling exhibit leaves Boston on September 13.
