I love my 2022 Kindle — it’s been my go-to for reading novels. Sometimes, I reach for it more then my phone. But I recently started looking for a color e-reader to read comics and graphic novels and to break free from the Amazon ecosystem. That’s when I discovered the Kobo Libra Colour.

Right out of the box, the Kobo Libra Colour is sleek, lightweight, and well-designed. The Google Drive integration is a huge plus, letting me easily transfer files, and borrowing library books is incredibly smooth. If you’re looking for a Kindle alternative, these features alone make Kobo a strong contender.
Is the Kobo Libra Colour Good for Comics?
Unfortunately, my excitement faded quickly when I tried to read comics and graphic novels. Here’s why:
✅ Color Saturation: The muted, newsprint-style colors actually appealed to me. I didn’t mind the softer tones compared to a tablet’s vivid display.
❌ Slow Page Turns & Choppy Performance: Flipping through pages felt laggy and frustrating. Zooming into panels was even worse — ghosting issues and a sluggish refresh rate made for an unpleasant experience.
❌ Not Worth the Price for Comics: At this price point, the performance simply isn’t there. I couldn’t finish a single comic page without feeling frustrated.
Kobo Libra Colour vs Kindle vs iPad for Comics
If you’re torn between Kobo, Kindle, and iPad for comics, here’s my take:
- Kobo Libra Colour: Great for ebooks and library books, but too slow for comics.
- Kindle (2022 model): Faster for novels, but no color support.
- iPad: Best for comics — smooth scrolling, vibrant colors, and no ghosting issues.
Final Verdict: Should You Buy the Kobo Libra Colour?
If you’re looking for a color e-reader for books, the Kobo Libra Colour is a solid choice with great features. But if your main goal is to read comics or graphic novels, skip it — the technology just isn’t ready yet.
My Recommendation:
✅ Keep your Kindle for novels
✅ Use an iPad for comics
❌ Skip the Kobo Libra Colour if comics are a priority
